The Sir John Beckwith Charitable Trust was established by Sir John in 1987 with the aim of helping a broad spectrum of charitable bodies. Between April 1993 and April 2018, the Trust made donations totalling £10.4 million across a wide range of educational, sports, arts, medical and community organisations.
Sir John and his fellow trustees have sought out the most talented and inspirational individuals with whom to work to maximise the impact and reach of funding provided by the Charity.
The organisations and initiatives highlighted on these pages represent excellence in their fields and are only a sample of those with whom the Charity has worked.
The Beckwith International Leadership Development programme (BILD) was established in 2009 to provide resources and build relationships that enable countries to develop sustainable National Centres for Leadership Development (NCLD), which use sport to touch the lives of young people. The programme is embedded in Tanzania and has now moved onto Ghana.
Due to the success of these BILD projects the programme is being rolled out in Jamaica and St Lucia. We expect the project to impact on 179,400 young people of all abilities via Youth Sport Leadership by the end of year 4 of the project.
BILD builds and shares knowledge developed in the UK and around the world, using the technical expertise, support and services of UK Sport and Youth Sport Trust, so that a sports leadership programme and resources can be owned, developed and adapted in each BILD country.
Initial funding is provided to support the establishment of each programme and subsequently scaled down as in-country solutions and opportunities are explored to provide funding and greater sustainability.
YST’s sister organisation, Youth Sport Trust International has inspired young people in over 60 countries across five continents, and has an outstanding track record of delivery and a reputation for effective partnerships, having established relationships with the British Council, UK Sport, UNICEF and United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace, as well as European partners and Governments.

International Inspiration (II) was established in response to the London 2012 bid team’s promise to reach young people all around the world through sport and connect them to the inspirational power of the Games. The organisation aims to enrich the lives of 12 million children of all abilities in 20 countries through the power of high quality and inclusive physical education, sport and play, a feat achieved in February 2012.
The Sir John Beckwith Charitable Trust has committed funds towards the establishment of the II programme in Tanzania and Ghana, building on the success of the Beckwith International Leadership Development programme (BILD) which is already in place there.

Over the next few years, high performance super–computing will become the driving force of cancer drug discovery. This is because a new era of cancer research is emerging that generates much larger sets of data than before. The Sir John Beckwith Charitable Trust has funded two of these supercomputers in recent years.
